When the government takes over a bank do the taxpayers own the assets of that bank?

If we are assuming all of the losses do we also get the assets? Is the Government in the real estate business now? What happens to all the property held as collateral?

We took a stake in the bank, and that includes all the assets. We only want to stabilize the credit markets, assess the assets and try to sell them and get some money back. At that point, we will exit the bank-owning business and let them go on their merry way.

This is not long-term, it's sort-of happened before with the S&L crisis in the 80's, and we did get money back from sold assets. The primary issue is that no one will lend banks any money (even other banks) when they don't know the value of the assets--so there are assets worth money but we don't know how much. I hope we (the gov't) don't have a fire-sale as we want to get as much as possible. That will take a year or two to come out of the recession.
