Is it good that the government provides money for college education?

If you read the artical on yahoo, it states that people who have a degree average 23,000 a year more then someone who just just has a high school diploma. In return, the government gets more in taxes because the person is making more $. If that's the case, then why do people complain about government providing money for college students for tuition?

The government interference in education by providing this money is a major factor in college tuition being totally out of reach for most people without the loans.

The WWII generation could get through college waiting tables as their sole source of income. That's simply not possible now.

Long ago, most college employees were teachers. Now there are several times more administrators than actual teachers.

On the flip side of that, just whose money is it that they are offering?

I believe that by providing money for a college education the government is investing in the future of the country. Not only are college graduates making more money, and paying more taxes as you stated, but they raise the intellegence level of the country as a whole. We need to be the best educated people in order to remain a strong and progressive nation. People with high school diplomas are not going to discover new cures for diseases, or develop new fuels for automobiles to end our dependence on oil. We need educated people, and the government should certainly invest in them.

The United States is one of the only industrialized countries that makes its citizens pay for college/university. In most European countries, a university degree is expected of most people and it is just another step of schooling after "high" school. Our government really doesn't spend THAT much money (especially in comparison to military and prison/correction spending) on the education of its citizens. If you are wealthy enough to afford college, you get to continue the wealth. But, if you REALLY want a full ride, squeeze out a puppy out of wedlock. Use the system for all you can. (not that I'm bitter that I have to pay for everything myself, mind you)

If the government didn't provide scholarships my siblings would not have gone to college. I wouldn't be able to go either without help. In return America has two school teachers and a nurse. I think it is a fair exchange to receive educators and someone who can save lives....

They should not complain. We need all the college grads we can get in this country.
