Can the government legally take your tax refund if you are unemployed & have a child?

I owe money for student loans. However, currently I am unemployed and I have a child. Is it legal for the government to take my income tax refund under these circumstances?

If u are in default 0f the school loans then yes, they will take your refund. If u are NOT in default they will not take it.

Yes the government IRS can seize your tax refund to pay back a government loan. This isn't your money as far as they see it and can be seized to pay back a debt you owe them. This also goes for owed child support or back taxes.

Legally Yes. Will they, perhaps not. It depends on a number of things. Did your getting pregnant try to keep you out of your debt obligation? If so, they have every right to obtain whatever funds are necessary to meet your obligations. If not, you need to meet with them and explain your situation and how you intend to complete your obligations.

depends if ur living with parents.

if kid under 16, i dont believe they can.

if your'e unemployed, how are u caring for a kid??

oh, if ur getting welfare and all that stuff, then yes, they can....since theyr'e already giving you all kinds of free assistance.

I believe they can keep it to pay back taxes, back child support, guaranteed student loans that are in default, and perhaps for other kinds of debts.
