How did the singaporean government manage to civilize the singaporean chinese?

coz for me, chinese is equivalent to dirty, messy, bad manners. I wonder how the singaporean government manage to civilize the chinese?

Actually, the people in Taiwan are Hokkien. And most if not all Chinese in Singapore are Han Chinese. They speak different dialects but the writing is standardized.

The thing with Singapore is that it is small. With an across the board compulsory education, it was rather easy to educate the students of 30 years ago of necessary manners. If you go to the 'heartlands', you can still see older folk behaving in 'uncivilized' manners, spitting on the floor, digging their nose in public, taking off their shoes and putting their feet up on chairs in public areas such as coffee shops etc. With education, such behavior is now the domain of the elderly or uneducated. With the compulsory primary education of today, it is hopeful that we can eradicate such behavior completely in about 10-20 years.

another part of the equation - lky eliminated all chinese language schools and even the nanyang univ wh was the bastion of chineseness. he didnt kill chineseness but he modified it. as u can see nanyang is still very much alive, very chinese and yet more civilized. same in schools - chinese must all take chinese as 2nd language - no choice given. so u get them to be more civilized.

frankly after having been to china several times, i find those who r in china r just as civilized as they shld be. some of those who come over r fr the 'spitting' class. so pl visit china - beijing, shanghai, guangdong, xiamen and see for yourself the changes the chinaman hv gone thru

Are you sure they managed?I doubt so!

Every where of any countries, there are people whose are dirty, messy and bad manners regardless of race. If you had been to China, there are many chinese whose are clean and well manners. You are just being biased.

As a Singaporean Chinese, we get turned off by the crude antics of mainland Chinese people, they talk loudly, they are quarrelsome, they litter, spit anywhere etc.

We are quite a different breed from them.

It could be due to the many years of compulsory education every Singaporean receives.

Chinese people in Singapore, particularly Hokkien people, are different from mainland Chinese and Taiwanese.

Over 90% of mainland Chinese and 98% of Taiwanese are Han Chiense. (edit: what I mean is current Taiwanese were grown under the occupation of Chiang Kai-shek's Chinese Nationalist Party.)

In Singapore, Hokkien people 45%, Chaozhou and Cantonese are 40%.

They are different people.

Equivalent to dirty, messy? Haven't you seen the town? You better not to guess from Han Chinese.

But today, after government loosened their immigrant policy, immigrants increased and they don't seem to care throwing trash away in the street.
