What steps is the government taking to make teaching an attractive career?

More and more we here of a teacher losing their job, prospects and reputation when they try to impose a modicum of discipline.

What are the Government and education authorities doing to back them. And i don't mean investigations and hearings which only make matters worse

The plain and simple answer to your question is NONE. In fact this lousy government are doing everything they can to put teachers off staying in the profession and intelligent people from entering it. Many schools nowadays have difficulty getting enough applicants to make up a short list for interview for senior posts such as heads, deputies and heads of department. The present person in charge (Who glories in the name of Ed Balls - nuff said?) does not even have the word "Education" in his title. And now they want to increase the leaving age to 18!!!! Why??? To increase the levels of truancy? To increase assaults on teachers? To encourage even more disruption in class? To get more teachers being happy-slapped on UTube? This government is NOT interested in educating our children and young people. It hopes that if they keep them ignorant of real life they can leave school, live on benefits and vote Labour. This government will never, EVER, support teachers against violent children and their equally violent parents. They will be Labour voters, that is if they bother to vote at all as they won't be able to read election literature. You can't really blame the local education authorities because their hands are tied by the government with its strategies, target, continual examinations and testing. It is so depressing, especially to those of us who, like me, remember the days when children were taught by teachers who were respected and who respected their classes. We didn't have all the modern technology but, take it from me, they left primary school able to read and able to cope with basic mathematics which is more than 50% of them can now.

What are they doing? Nothing. If you ask many people who want to be teachers, most of them the first thing they say is they want to work with children. I know this because I am currently in college to be a teacher. As I decited on this career, some of the things going on in Education today made me rethink if I wanted to be a teacher or not. The pay, though not good by many standards is better than what I am making now, there are 401k plans and good medical, and dont forget the payed holidays and 3 months a year summer vacation. Those all look good to people who chose teaching as a career. For me, I see where the Education system needs reform, and I want to be one of the people who help make it what it should be. Many states are spending millions on new ball statiums, and letting their schools fall into ruin. Students cant learn when their floors are flooded, the walls are falling in, and they dont even have computers. It angers me that just down the road from these schools (many of which have been condemed but class still goes on because there is no place to move the students to), are schools that are beautiful, clean, newly built, have swimming pools, and computers in every room. We can not exspect children from each of these schools to learn the same things. Then to make matters worse they have the standardised tests. So you are giving these children nothing and exspecting them to give 100% back? Schools are being shut down and teachers fired, when they haven't even been given the chance to teach these students. And the govenment says the money is not there...

The No Child Left Behind act is depriving children of the education they deserve. All the children are getting left behind, and the teachers are following. Knowing what I do, I still want to be a teacher, and I am striving to be the best teacher I can. The children deserve it. They deserve people who care, people who respect them, and better learning environments.

It's not!

Infact below inflation pay rises for teachers are making the career less attractive. The National Union of Teachers is going on strike on the 24th of April because of this.

If you are going into teaching it has to be because you want to teach. As a graduate you would have better job prospects, more money, better working environment (e.g less pressurised) and less work load than a teacher if you got another job that required a degree.

none, they are just increasing the stress on teacers by tightening the insane expectations from No Child Left Behind, forcin teachers to abandon the career they love because now they have to teach to the test in order to keep their job and not teach because they love their job. The government is scaring away teachers not attracting them...

Just the opposite. They are punishing teachers for not being able to magically make ESOL students fluent in a year or two. It doesn't work that way and the government could do a cursory research study on the internet and find that out in two minutes. (Research shows that it takes 5-7 years in a best case.)

not a lot-in the school i work i think 30/40 percent are up for retirement within the next 5 years and its getting so hard to fill the vacancies-the government has to make changes but sadly it all comes down to money-more and more schools classes will be "taught" by teaching assistants and cover supervisors-its very sad indeed

I take it you mean:

"What steps ARE the Government taking?"

and

"More and more we HEAR of teachers losing their jobs..."

MY assessment of this question 3/10 -

Must pay more attention to grammar and spelling

signed

A teacher who lost his job

(BTW: The answer to your question - "Not much")

None of the right things unfortuneately.

Example; It's very hard to get someone to go into debt for four years + of college when they're guaranteed to earn less than a shift manager at McDonalds, if they can find a job in the field at all.

There's lots more but I'm not gonna rant.

More money, more respect, more support and more appreciation. Teaching is very tough and getting tougher but I still love it.

Writing lots of mission statements

Setting lots of targets

Having lots a lots of new initiatives

Setting up loads of new committees

I mean it's all bound to make a difference isn't it?
