How many people realize that the government can do nothing about this?

People want to complain all the time about the government causing all of their problems. Right now they are blaming the government for the downturn in the economy, the rise in gas and food prices, and the housing crisis. Why do people think the government has any control over this? Why don't people prepare for the bad economic times during the times when everything is great? Why do people whine and complain to the government for their problems?

Wow!

1) downturn in the economy might have something to do with the $3 Trillion unnecessary war in Iraq, or the tax-break given to companies that export jobs, or the non-regulated price gouging on Gas and utilities, or the corporate bailouts/handouts, of the huge deficit ran up while cutting taxes for the super-rich.

2) the price of gas might have something to do with Bushco turning the tap off in Iraq, or threatening the rest of the middle east almost daily, or Bush's buddies the Saudis decreasing production, or the complete absence of fuel efficiency standards, or the non-regulation of the Big Oil.

You get the idea

The government can impact the cost of products and services with the adding of taxes, the adding of regulations (which result in time spent making sure they are followed, time costing money) or by forcing businesses to pay certain amounts for jobs.

The price of oil is set in the commodities markets...not in the government. The Oil companies pay what the markets state, then have a mark up when the finished product is delivered to the retail markets. The record profits are not from price gouging by the oil companies, they are due to the demand that users have put on the product.

How long did we hear that we had a bad war just to give us cheap oil....like cheap oil was a bad thing.....but now that oil is FAR from cheap, the same people are crying for government to take actions to lower the cost of gasoline...

That's what happens when people make decisions on how to respond to things by wetting their finger and checking the way the wind is blowing. It's hypocritical but not unexpected by that crowd (the "government please take care of all my needs" crowd that can't handle being in charge of their own lives and decisions now that they don't have mommy to do it for them....government is now mommy).

THANK YOU SO MUCH

FINALLY SOMEONE WITH SENSE!

President Bush doesn't control this economy, theres only so much he can do to influence it

His tax cuts, interest rate cuts, and economic stimulus act have actually prevented the economy from being much worse then it could be

Recessions come around ever so often, its just a historical trend

In any case, people need to take responsibility for their actions, the people who can't pay their mortgages shouldn't wine to the government for money because it's not their problem, its the own person's fault for signing the sub-prime mortgage.

People complain because they should. In the real world people have to explain poor performance on their job.It is the job of the government to make sure that citizens are being treated fairly and everyone gets the help that they need.Money is important to every one. There are few people in the world who get up and go to work just for the fun of It.Some people work very hard just for taxes to eat up their check. If money is being taken out of my check on a regular basis for the good of the econoy, I want to see it working. If it is'nt making a difference then I want it all back.

I think it is a combo package. Nafta didn't help, made it cheaper and easier for large companies to send jobs oversea. AT&T bought out cingular wireless, now they are closing call centers and they are telling the press that they can't find skilled workers here. truth is, they have a communications workers union, and call centers pay about 10.00 an hour plus benefits, if they move the call center to India, cheaper labor, no health care, company makes more money, CEO gets big bonus, meanwhile 10,000 Americans lose their job. Gasoline, oh they have what is called a commodities market. basically you bet on if there will be enough of a product (commodity) since the market is unregulated, Oil companies can buy oil futures, and claim that they are having a problem at a refinery, drive up the cost, and they don't have to answer to anyone. the housing market situation happened when they passed legislation to allow banks to do investment banking again. banks used to make housing loans, and had to hold the loan themselves. but since the passing of the legislation, they make the loans, sell them to a broker, get their money. since the passing the banks would finance loans easier since they didn't have to worry about collecting the money, and the greedy mortgage companies would buy them up. the laws that were passed by congress were passed to favor lobby groups, and not for the best interest of the average American, so that is why I say it is a combo package.

Our wonderful President vetoed a bill that would Tax his friends in the Oil business on their Largest profits ever.

Our govt backs the banks Thur FDIC, that are making these great Sub-Prime Loans, when the bank fails who is covering the Banks customers Money.

The Govt has Subsidized farmers not to grow wheat and corn for decades, They should have been funding research to make ethanol more affordable, and just bought the crops.

We are at War, when a Country is at War its economy should be striving, due to the large amounts of money being spent on the War Effort.

Governments are responsible for the development and execution of economic policy. There are certain factors outside of governmental control, but...you don't generally blame a government for a downturn in productivity and increased costs because of say...drought. Other than that...the government has to carry the bulk of the blame for ineffective policy.

Lack of personal accountability. There are things going on that make life hard that the government could regulate, such as speculators taking over the commodities market and taking those necesities and making themselves rich by manipulating the markets.

However, many things that are going wrong with America, for example the mortgage crisis, are self inflicted wounds that we did to ourselves because Americans have gotten greedy and lazy.

I agree with some of what you say. However, the government has the power to keep the American public from being raped by big industry and they should start using that power against big oil! Other Presidents have done it in times of crisis and this my friend is a frigging crisis!

The government=head honchos= the people that decide how are lives are run to an extent. When things go wrong it's only natural to blame someone else and not take any responsibility for it. The government can do something about the current situation i.e. gas if they so choose to do so.

The government is largely irrelevant. Big corporation run the country, and the world. If people want to blame someone, blame the oil companies. Burn a few gas stations--that oughta do it.

the government is the problem. name one (1) government program that has been good for us. the people will wake up someday and find out that government has caused all the problems we face.

how old are you? and do you have any grasp on how the world works?

Well I am not affected by the current situation, for those that are, I am sorry but you should plan better. People need something to blame, so they blame the government.

My friend, people generally blame the person who played the biggest role in screwing something up.

It just happens to be the government this time.

I couldn't agree more! I am so sick of hearing people whine and complain (mostly coming from the left).

Look up Tri Lateral Commission. You'll see whom steers the powers that be.

We Americans just love to *****.
