What is your opinion on federal system of government?

Fewer than 10% of countries in the world have federal forms of government. Why, in your considered view, is this? What are some of the advantages of a federal system of government? Some of the disadvantages? (There must be disadvantages since most countries have not chosen federal systems--they prefer unitary systems of government.) Explain fully.

It really depends on how it's managed. The smaller a country is, the less likely that it will have a federal system. But there are exceptions like Switzerland, which is in some aspects even more federal than the US (for example, a Geneva citizen is completely different from a Zurich citizen!). Also, tiny Belgium went from a unitary government to a federal system.

The European union is increasingly moving towards a federal system in the sense that national governments are giving up a part of their power to a higher 'union' in the make: one currency, a common defence policy etc. Another 15 to 20 years, and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes one federal country, say the United States of Europe. Now the interesting thing is that local culture, languages etc. are now more valued than before. It's moving away from being a union of states towards being a union of regions.

The old big powers like France will keep hanging on to their unitary systems, which were designed to make diverse countries easier to govern. But that's a thing from the past. Not only in Europe but also in some poor countries. Look at Bolivia and you'll see a tendency for cultural regions to demand more autonomy.

I think a federal system is so much better than a unitary system. It could be the ultimate solution for the problems between Turkey and the Kurds, for example. However, there needs to be a political will to respect local cultures and human rights, otherwise it won't happen.

If we had a true Democracy and not a republic, it would be far better...plus if we had paper ballots and lever ballots and not the illegal and dishonest electron inc machines ...

Congress would look a lot different, and much more progressive.

The fed govt is corrupt, that includes All the pres. candidates left.

Corrupt as hell, and do not care about commoners, despite their rhetoric. ///talk is cheap and they have been silent too long stealing from us...

Otherwise, things would not have gotten so bad,.

It worked very well here while we had it! But Lincoln's war and the socialist movement of the early 20th century killed ours

You might want to look at the idea that the larger the country is, the less likely it is that a unitary government is effective. Many of the countries in the world are smaller than my home state of Arizona, let alone the entire USA
