What kind of government assistance is available for a 62 year old with nothing?

My father is 62, lost his job with Countrywide, has no money or retirement savings. I don't have the money to support him and am wondering what kind of government assistance is out there to help someone in his situation.

Unemployment benefits

Food stamps

Welfare

Social security. Please note, however, that if he claims social security at 62, which is 4 years before the full retirement age, he will get only 75% of the full benefit.

If he qualifies, he can draw Social Security starting at age 62.

welfare and food stamps probably. But, if he just got laid off - he should be able to file for unemployment for 6-9 months and when that's done, he could always put in for early social security benefits (he's 62, he's eligible) if nothing else comes along
