Why is the Chinese government in the Binhai New Area so paranoid about cable TV?

They took away our satellite dish here in the Binhai New Area, Tianjin, China. The government people said that people are not allowed to have satellite dishes - only the government can have them. Is it this way all over China? What is China so afraid of cable TV? They've managed to censor some sites in the Internet and now they also want to forbid cable TV? What's the use of opening up to the world and throwing a huge Olympic bash?

Yes, that's how it is all over China. The Olympics was all about "face", about looking good in front of the world. In reality China still has a long, long way to go.

What you have to understand is that the government of China has been this way for nearly 60 years. Most of the people who make the rules now were brought up to believe that this kind of control on people's minds is necessary. They rightly recognize that the most powerful weapon in this world is the idea. So they want to be the only source of ideas for people in China.

But they will eventually fail. Why? Because Chinese people are leaving China to study abroad and because overseas Chinese keep ties with their relatives. That's how the ideas will get in that will change China, and all the government can do is try to delay it. It cannot stop it.

In the meantime, you can't do anything about your satellite dish. Sorry.

They're a communist country and don't like too much freedom for their people.
