Is there a government that is intolerant to a lot of behaviour which an individual should experience?

I want to compare it to the government in Salem during the witch trials, whereby individuals were restricted and couldnt preform things such as dancing and reading books beside the bible.

Any previous governments or governments today that were like this to some extent?
